A Taste of Cuban Excellence – Inside the Launch of Havana Club's Icónica Collection
This past weekend, we had the pleasure of attending the much-anticipated launch of the Icónica Collection by Havana Club, which marks a bold leap into a new era of prestige rum, blending Havana Club’s storied heritage with modern luxury.
Over five decades of dedication to the craft of rum-making culminate in this extraordinary range of extra-aged and rare rums. As we explored the collection, we felt a palpable connection to the Maestros del Ron Cubano—the guardians of this artisanal tradition, while we also had the honor of meeting and discussing with Asbel Morales, Havana Club’s renowned Maestro del Ron Cubano and the visionary behind the Icónica collection.
On the first encounter with the collection, we were swiftly allured by its elegant design, inspired by Havana’s revered Giraldilla statue—a symbol of the city’s grace and resilience. The bottles, adorned with golden Giraldilla motifs, incorporate a contemporary flair while paying homage to the elegance of traditional Cuban architecture. One can easily find himself captivated by the thoughtful design details, which not only enhance the visual appeal but also connect the spirits to the rich cultural tapestry of Havana.
The highlight of the event was undoubtedly the tasting session, where we had the opportunity to savor the different expressions of the Icónica Collection. Each sip was an exploration of flavors, reflecting years of craftsmanship and the unique characteristics of the rums.
Havana Club Selección de Maestros
Sipping on the Havana Club Selección de Maestros, we were drawn into the story behind its warm amber hue and rich flavor profile. Aged to perfection and bottled at cask strength (45% ABV), this rum is a tribute to the collaborative process of the Maestros. On the nose, it showcased toasted pecan and spice, a testament to the meticulous wood aging process. The palate revealed a round mouthfeel leading to a complex, full-bodied experience with notes of cocoa, coffee, sweet tobacco, and brown spices. A pleasant smoky oak and spice finish combined with candied fruits provided a remarkable balance.
Havana Club Gran Reserva Añejo 15 Años
The Havana Club Gran Reserva Añejo 15 Años stood out with its enveloping patterns that beautifully complement its rich mahogany color. One could easily taste the meticulous blending of rare liquids and the dedication to quality in every sip. The aroma was outstandingly rich and persistent, delicately balancing oak and smoky notes with subtle hints of fresh pear, coconut, and dried fruit. On the palate, the oaky flavors imparted a silky opulence with a cascade of dark chocolate, dried fruits, and a hint of vanilla, culminating in a warm, long finish with spicy notes.
Havana Club Máximo Extra Añejo
As we moved on to the pièce de résistance, the Havana Club Máximo Extra Añejo, we felt the weight of tradition and luxury in our glass. Priced at €2,500 and presented in a stunning crystal decanter, this rum is more than just a beverage; it’s a statement of artistry, heritage, and Cuban history. The hand-blown decanter and exquisite wooden stopper added a tactile experience that enhanced the enjoyment, making it clear that this collection is not only about what’s inside the bottle but also the craftsmanship that goes into its presentation. Notably, Havana Club has reduced plastic components by 89% across the whole collection staying loyal to its commitment to sustainability. This rum shared the same amber glow, enhanced by extra aging. Its nose was remarkably rich and intense, maintaining a delicate aroma that balanced oak and smoky notes with fresh pear, coconut, and dried fruit. On the palate, it was dry and sweet, with silky opulence and layers of dark chocolate and dried fruits, finished off with a warm, lingering presentation of spice.
Discussing with Asbel Morales, Havana Club’s esteemed Maestro del Ron Cubano, he stated that “Each bottle in the Icónica Collection encapsulates the mastery of Cuban rum-making, a legacy now recognized by UNESCO as a World Intangible Heritage.”
The revamped Icónica Collection is set to be introduced to global markets in the coming months and will be widely available early next year (2025), while it promises to set a new standard in prestige rum. This launch was not just an introduction to a new range of spirits but an immersive experience that celebrated the heart and soul of Cuban culture. Leaving the event we carried a profound appreciation for the craftsmanship, heritage, and vibrant culture that define Havana Club.
